Houblon de la Motte has been growing, harvesting and drying Santiam hops and processing them into pellets in Flanders (59) since 2017.

This variety is one of those selected for its vigour, aroma qualities and disease resistance.
The grower has been growing hops organically since 2017 and obtained certification in 2021.

Larger planting projects are under way with the same grower, and elsewhere in France too.

Planning to brew a Belgian Tripel, lager, Kölsch or American Pale Ale? Use Santiam!

The variety was developed at the Agriculture Research Service in Corvallis, Oregon; Santiam is derived from Swiss Tettnanger, Hallertau Mittelfrüh and Cascade (USA). It has agronomic characteristics similar to the latter:

• Relatively good disease resistance, particularly to downy mildew, low susceptibility to aphids.
• Good yields (1600-2000 kg/hectare)
• Good aroma and alpha quality (5 to 7% alpha acids) and fairly low co-humulone content (20-22%)

This makes it an ideal candidate for organic farming in France.

The USDA released this variety in 1997.

From a sensory point of view, it gives predominantly herbal aromas, but also floral ones with spicy notes. Brewers use this variety to enhance Belgian Tripels, lagers, Kölsch or American Pale Ales.

You can substitute Santiam with the varieties Tettnanger, Spalter Select, Cascade, or Hallertau Mittelfrüh.
