Description

Brewer's Gold hops are grown, dried and processed into pellets by Houblon de la Motte in Flanders (Nord, 59).

This variety is one of those selected for its vigour, aroma qualities and disease resistance.

Production of Brewer's Gold under organic farming in Europe is very limited: only a few tonnes are produced in France.

Professor Ernest Stanley Salmon selected this variety at Wye College in England in 1919; it is the result of the open pollination of a wild hop from Morden, Manitoba.

Despite its popularity, the super-alpha hop varieties of the 1980s (Northern Brewer, Target, Nugget) supplanted Brewer's Gold. For brewers wanting to experiment with the aromas of Brewer's Gold, it gives notes of spice and blackcurrant when used for aroma.

It is quite close to its little sister, Bullion.

From an agronomic point of view, Brewers Gold appears to be fairly susceptible to diseases and insects, and today it is grown mainly in Bavaria.

Brewer's Gold is the parent of many modern super-alpha varieties; it was used to breed varieties such as:
