Houblon de la Motte has been growing, harvesting and drying organic Chinook hops and processing them into pellets in Flanders (59) since 2017.
This variety is one of those selected for its vigour, aroma qualities and disease resistance.
The grower has been growing hops organically since 2017 and obtained certification in 2021.
Larger planting projects are under way with the same grower, and elsewhere in France too.
Use organic Chinook for beers such as pale ale, IPA and NEIPA, to make the most of its very fruity aroma, with notes of citrus, lemon and stone fruit.
The Chinook variety is a cross between Petham Golding and a Neomexicanus male from the USDA and has a spicy, pine-like bouquet with grapefruit flavours. Released in 1985, Chinook has recently gained popularity, particularly among craft breweries.
It is one of the varieties with the greatest aroma potential currently grown in France.
- Relatively good disease resistance, particularly to downy mildew, low susceptibility to aphids.
- Good yields (1400-1800 kg/hectare)
- Good aroma and alpha quality (9-14% alpha acids) and fairly low co-humulone content (20-22%)
This makes it an ideal candidate for organic farming in France.
