Houblon de la Motte has been growing, harvesting and drying Bullion hops (pellets) in Flanders (59) since 2017.
This variety is one of those selected for its vigour, aroma qualities and disease resistance.
The grower has been growing hops organically since 2017 and obtained certification in 2021.
Daughter of Brewer's Gold, Bullion pellets share its best characteristics:
- Notes of spice
- Notes of stone fruit
- Exotic fruit
On the alpha side, you can use it for bittering or late hopping, its alpha acids (5 to 9%) making it fairly flexible to use.
The Bullion variety was released in 1938 and comes from a cross with a wild Canadian hop from the Manitoba region. Although it was once popular with professional brewers, Bullion, like its sister, saw its production reduced in favour of super-alpha varieties (Northern Brewer, Nugget, Target).
The variety has virtually disappeared from the market since the 1980s, grown on fewer than ten hectares worldwide.
You can substitute Bullion hops with other varieties:
- Brewer's Gold
- Chinook
- Galena
- Bramling Cross
- Columbus
- Northern Brewer
On the agronomic side, Bullion shares with Brewer's Gold a slight susceptibility to downy mildew, and its yields per hectare are exceptional (2000 to 2500 kg).
